Ulava Kattu/ Tangy Horse gram broth/ Ulava Pindi Kattu/ Kollu Kattu/ Kulith Kadi

 

Horse gram is the most protein-rich lentil found on the planet. It is very high-powered. That is why racehorses are fed with this gram, which is called horse gram in the market. It helps with insulin resistance, helps urinary discharge, prevents kidney stones, heals ulcers, asthma relief, keeps heart diseases away, is good for bones, keeps us warm in the winters, controls menstrual problems, and many more. However, anything more is dangerous to us. So, healthy foods are also meant to be taken in a displined manner. 

  

To make this recipe, you'll need : 

Ulavalu/ Horse gram - 100g (Indian dessert bowl)


Onion - 1
Green Chillies - 2 
Tamarind - 40g 
Red chilli powder - 3 teaspoons 
Turmeric -1/4th teaspoon
Asafoedita (hing) - 1/4th teaspoon
Salt - 2 1/2 teaspoons (or) to taste

For Tempering :

Oil - 2 teaspoons
 Garlic cloves - 5
Onion - reserved from the previous step
Urad dal - 1 teaspoon 
Red chilli - 3 nos 
Curry leaves - 1 sprig 
Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon



Method : 

1. Dry roast the horse gram until golden brown and set to cool aside.




2. Once cooled, grind it into a fine powder, sift, and keep it aside.





3. Extract the tamarind juice with enough water.


4. Add half of the onion (sliced) and slit green chilies.


5. To this add red chilli powder, turmeric, and salt. Give it a good mix. 





6. To this add the horse gram flour and mix well ensuring no lumps are formed.
Add 4 glasses of water.
 Cook on the low flame, while stirring continuously until thickens. 
(For about 5 to 8 mins).




Tempering : 

To a tempering pan, add oil, once the oil is hot add, mustard seeds, urad dal, garlic cloves, onions, curry leaves, and dried red chilies.








Add this tempering to the cooked kattu and taste, adjust seasonings if necessary, and serve hot. This will turn thick as it cools.
